Transporting
Mercury wheel barometers can be transported by car by tying behind one of the seats carefully to the headrest or leaning at an angle of no less than perhaps 15o . On no account should it be laid flat, as mercury can run out. Mercury is banned on aircraft so it should not be sent by carrier without special advice on packing. Often mercury barometers have a plugging device inside to help restrict the flow of mercury and reduce the risk of air bubbles entering. Unless you are totally conversant with the use of these devices they are best not used but a small amount of masking tape can be placed over the strings to hold them in position whilst in transit to stop the strings jumping off the pulley wheel. All our customers are shown how to travel with restored barometers to their home and methods of re-commissioning them. If you have a barometer that you wish to have restored by us, please do not send it but first contact us. We have more detailed instructions for carriage.
