How
do I transport a mercury stick barometer?
Again, much care is needed, but generally keeping the barometer at an angle, perhaps around 60o 70o, will restrict the movement of mercury in transit and stop the mercury banging up against the top of the tube. If in doubt travel with it upright. Many barometers can travel flat but unless you are certain that it is safe to do so it is not recommended as a general instruction. It is often best to travel with the barometer positioned left to right in line with the axles instead of back to front to help avoid any momentum force (braking!) allowing the mercury to move. If they have to travel front to back then ensure the top is facing forwards so the mercury can not move any further along the tube. Should you have a stick barometer that you wish us to undertake restoration please do not send it to us but contact us for further more detailed instructions and special bags to ensure no loss of mercury occurs. It is also always useful to have a photograph of an item. Although barometers fall within certain categories, there are a number of unusual ones which crop up from time to time.
